The Berlin Institute for Islamic Theology (BIT) invites applicants for a
Full Professorship “Islamic Beliefs and Philosophy” (W3)
to be filled as soon as possible.
The faculty position deals with two central areas of Islamic-theological sciences: Islamic foundations of faith and Islamic philosophy. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in research and teaching that emphasizes the historical intellectual strands addressing core theological questions (e. g. kalām and traditionalism) and their contextualizations. In addition, expertise is expected in examining philosophical schools, including Aristotelian and Neoplatonic approaches, as well as post-metaphysical discourses, and in exploring the interaction between the Islamic foundations of faith and philosophy. The faculty member will offer courses, supervise bachelor's and master's theses as well as doctoral candidates. If necessary, the faculty member will also supervise habilitations. Supporting the overall development of the BIT is required, along with engaging in academic administrative processes. In addition to acquiring and implementing third-party funded projects, the faculty member is expected to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation with faculties and institutes at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and other research institutions in the broader region of Berlin as well as with the growing international network of the BIT.
The applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 100 of the `Berliner Hochschulgesetz´. Requirements for employment are a completed degree in Islamic theology, Islamic sciences or other relevant subjects, pedagogical aptitude and the ability to carry out in-depth independent academic work, proven by an outstanding relevant doctorate in the field. Research and teaching experience in these research areas should be demonstrated.
