Islamic Textual Studies (Qur'an and Hadith)
Prof. Nimet Şeker
In her research Professor Şeker focuses on hermeneutics of Qur’an and Hadith. She examines exegetical approaches to the scriptures that allow to overcome the hermeneutic distance between the contemporary recipients and the historical first addressees of the Qur’an. This includes research into the origin, genesis and the interpretation of the scriptures using methods of historical contextualization and criticism. Another focus of her work are the classical Qur’anic sciences. Şeker also examines gender as a category of knowledge in interpreting the Qur’an. The focus here is on the contribution of female knowledge production to exegesis, hermeneutics of gender-egalitarian interpretations, and gender related topics in the Qur’an and in early Islamic traditions.
